View of the Keepers Quarters and ever-growing sand spit, from the lighthouse. At the time of this picture, the sand spit was roughly 5.5 miles long. It is the longest natural sand spit in the United States and one of the largest natural spits in the world.

This modern optic was installed in 1976. The fourth-order Fresnel Lens was moved to the US Coast Guard Museum in Seattle. (http://walightkeepers.com/Gallery/album13?page=8) When the original Fresnel lens was extinguished for the final time, Coast Guard keeper William A. Byrd wrote: "The prism lens was turned off ... and the sparkling glass and rotating prism lens was replaced with a cold apparatus." Amen...
